LEARNING TARGET
Students will
- Learn to create a bowl or vase using both blended and exposed coil methods
- Create a detailed design for their coil pot
- Use their plan to create an original coil pot ensuring that they meet the project requirements
- Consider what strong craftsmanship looks like when building with coils
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS
Work carefully and methodically to build your coil pot applying coil techniques demonstrated in class
INSPIRE & DESIGN:
Website: At least 4 images of coil vessels describing what you like about each piece.
Plan: Create a detailed sketch and description of your coil pot design.
Website: At least 4 images of coil vessels describing what you like about each piece.
Plan: Create a detailed sketch and description of your coil pot design.
- Decide on a shape for your pot. Draw at least three thumbnail (small, simple) sketches of form options for your bowl/vase.
- What artifact will you incorporate in your design?
- What types of coils will you include?
CREATE:
View demo in class and practice making coils if you have time.
If you missed the demo or need a refresher, watch the videos below to learn how to roll coils and different construction techniques. *Make sure to keep your coils damp as you work so that they don't crack. *Keep clay and coils covered in plastic while you're working. |

COIL BUILDING TIPS:
- If clay is cracking, spray with water and roll
- Make your coils larger than you think they need to be
- If coils are uneven, twist them lightly while rolling out.
- Build 2-3 coils high then blend
- Use wood modeling tool first, then smooth with metal rib
- Keep all clay soft while working - spray and cover with plastic
- Review this page for problems and solutions to coil building.
FINISHING UP:
- Review the rubric
- Review your original design sketch and consider if there is anything you want to add, remove, change, adjust.
- Make finishing touches:
- Use a metal rib to smooth out blended coil sections (bottom and interior)
- Use a dry or damp paintbrush to clean up exposed coils
- Compare craftsmanship to bisque fired examples
- Is there anything you forgot that you wanted include?
- Your coil pot does not need to look like your original sketch but it's always good to use as a guide.
