MORE INFORMATION
What is the minimum size?
11" x 15" or larger
Which paper do I use?
The mixed media paper. This is 18" x 24" to start - you can cut in half for 12" x 18" or go slightly smaller. You may use white charcoal or colored pencil on black paper if you would like.
Can I make a larger suminagashi print to use as my background?
Yes! Use the lightweight watercolor paper in this case.
May I use magazines if I want to create a 2D collage (paper drawing) similar to example #2 above?
Absolutely. Magazines are on a cart in the storage room. If you use them, please put them back neater than you found them.
How do I cut paper - whether for collage or to cut out negative space in my drawing?
Use an X-acto knife with a cutting mat underneath. Be safe - keep your fingers out of the way and cut away from your body.
How will I be graded on this project?
11" x 15" or larger

How will I be graded on this project?
- Time and Effort
You will have 6-7 class periods to complete this project. That is not a lot. You need to spend the entirety of each class period working on this piece. You may not finish early. If you think you're done, keep going. If you're stuck, ask someone in class for feedback/help/ideas. - Craftsmanship/Technique
Craftsmanship is about taking pride in your work. Keeping your paper free of tears and folds, cleaning up unintentional marks and smudges. Learning to use tools and materials correctly to make your work as strong as possible. - Creativity/Originality
Use your imagination to come up with ideas then create or seek out objects or photos to use as reference. We look at examples to help us develop our own ideas but you should never copy existing artwork. However, when making representational art, you should be using objects from life or photos for reference - don't try to create a likeness from memory. When using reference images, it's best to take your own photos when possible and to blend multiple images when using found photographs. - Artist Statement
Your artist statement should explain how your final piece met the criteria for either the 2D Design or Drawing option. You should also describe your creative process - How did you come up with your idea? How did you incorporate your suminagashi print into your artwork? What media did you use and why? What challenges did you encounter and how did you solve the problem? Did your final product turn out as you expected? Better? Worse? Why? What would you have done differently?
